Bathroom Remodeling Tips from Home Architects

Are you thinking about remodeling your bathroom? If it’s time for an upgrade and you’re ready to build the bathroom of your dreams, our architects have put together this helpful list of bathroom remodeling tips to make the process as easy as possible. While you might think that your ideal bathroom is too expensive to become a reality, you’d be surprised how much you can do with a smaller budget!

Bathroom renovations can be tricky because most bathrooms are small, many are oddly-shaped, and some don’t even have any natural light. Regardless, a successful remodel is still possible and our residential architects are happy to help. Here are some of our most important do’s and don’ts, as well as some top tips for bathroom renovation.

You can move the bathtub, but don’t move the faucet.

Changing the location of your bathtub can make your bathroom more spacious, but we don’t recommend changing the location of the faucet because relocating all the necessary pipes will quickly drive up your costs. You can of course replace your faucet and sink with a newer, sleeker option, but keeping it in the same spot will be easiest.

Keep the design simple.

The majority of us have smaller bathrooms with not much space to spare, so we always recommend keeping it simple in terms of design. When you keep it simple with light fixtures, decorative moldings, mirrors, medicine cabinets and other features, it can make your space feel bigger and doesn’t overwhelm you.

Consider patterned tiles and bright paint colors.

While bright white is a classic look, don’t be afraid to experiment with patterned tiles and brightly-colored paints on the walls! Patterned tiles instantly add some character and metro tiling creates the illusion of more space while looking sleek and modern. Patterned tiles paired with a bold paint color can really make your bathroom pop – for example, if your tiles have green accents, consider painting at least one wall of your bathroom the same green color to tie it all together.

When choosing your flooring, think functional.

Your bathroom is one of the most frequently used rooms in your home, and it’s a space where lots of water, steam, and humidity are present. While you may have your heart set on hardwood floors in your bathroom, we don’t recommend it because of how easily wood is affected by water, steam, and humidity. There are great alternatives like different types of tile, and there are waterproof vinyl options that look like real hardwood.

Use large mirrors

It’s an age-old interior design trick: use mirrors to make a space appear larger than it is. If your bathroom feels small and cramped, try hanging a large, frameless mirror that covers one entire wall. It can instantly open up your space and make it feel roomier.

Get the lighting right

Many bathrooms don’t get sufficient natural light, and harsh, artificial lighting can easily ruin the aesthetic of the room. When choosing lighting placement and light bulbs for your bathroom, use softer lighting similar to that around a vanity mirror. Also, try not to hang the light fixtures directly over your head. Overhead fluorescent lighting can be unflattering, and it doesn’t properly showcase the beautiful colors of your bathroom.
